The Horse-rider

Many people find it difficult to control their anger. Quite often they go around seeking advice in this regard.

Anger, like other emotions, can help motivate human behaviour. Like other emotions, anger can be used as fuel to power your actions. One must learn how to do that.

Emotions are like a horse. When you tame and ride the horse, it carries you to your destination; when the horse rides you, it tramples you underfoot and may even kill you. Do you ride your anger or does it ride you? You can answer this question by reviewing your moments of anger in retrospect. Ask yourself these questions about your behaviour during the fit of anger:

* Did you do things that you later regretted?

* Did others tell you that you had gone out of control?

* Did you yourself have a feeling that at that time something within you was behaving in a manner that you do not approve of?

* While assessing the gains and losses from your fit of anger, do you find that overall you lost more than you gained?

If you find that the horse of anger is riding you, you must learn to tame and ride it without killing it. You must change your anger into fuel. This requires systematic and step-by-step training and guidance.
